what year tacoma??
I tried on my 96 tacoma because i also have no tach so i ordered one from a junkyard and put it in but the tach didnt work but everything else did. Ive also heard that there might be a fuse or something like that for a tach that the truck doesnt have since it was unequipped. But havent tried that one yet.

I added a tach to my '85, but had to find a place on the engine to hook it. The schematic in the shop manual showed where the factory tach connected, but the necessary wiring was not in my harness. Toyota apparently figured it was cheaper to not include the wiring in vehicles manufactured without a tach. Maybe they were still doing that with your tacoma.

after the 96 model they went from cable to all electrical but i also dont know if that has anything to do with it. and since the cluster was used there really wasnt any guarantee that it would work but like i said the rest of the guages worked fine.

I've a 95.5, should I try to find a 96 at the latest? Or would the later years work too?

Any cluster would work prior to 96 because after 96 the speedo isnt cable driven.

Seems wierd

Seems like all Taco's should be that way? Since they started in 95.5, I bet they all are that way. Doesn't seem like they'd keep it cable driven on the new model for one year and then change it over.? Some aftermarket stuff for Taco's shows 96-* even though they started in 95.
bet they're lumping 95.5 into 96's.

Thats what im sayin. Its a different front end after 96 but i guess that doesnt mean anything even though the everything on 97 up tacos are electrical unlike the 96 and earlier.
