Ok i have a 1991 Toyota Pick up with a 1988 22RE engine. The previous owner blew the original engine and replaced it with a 88 22RE. Ok, so here's some background info. The check engine light came on about 6 months ago but the truck seemed to still run fine and i didn't have the money to take the truck in and have them run the code. Then the power and gas mileage started to deteriorate over time. 2 months ago i put a new O2 sensor in and brand new plugs. The old plugs had about 15kmi on them. With the new O2 and plugs the truck ran noticeably better but anytime the truck went up the slightest incline, you could feel the truck stumble and the Check Engine light would immediately come on and stay on until the engine was turned off.
Fast forward to this weekend. On a hunch i figured the original cap and rotor had never been replaced so i decide to check it. To my surprise there was not metal left inside the cap. It was amazing the thing even ran. So i run to the store and pick up a new cap and rotor. I pulled all the plug wires off one at a time and kept the old cap there to use as a guide. I was sure to put every plug wire back in it's respective place and sprayed the inside of it with WD40 to use as a water dispersement for the future. After installation i start the truck back up and notice immediately that the thing idles HORRIBLY. It spits, sputters and just plain sounds like it is "camming", so to speak. I'm 100% positive i installed the cap and rotor properly ( how hard is that?) but the truck only started acting like this right after i put the new cap and rotor on. The Check Engine light is coming back on too, power is down and gas mileage is horrible. WTF could it be?? Please advise away
