Built 1978 20R or 1982 stock 22R ??

Would I be better off swapping out my stock 22R that is giving me problems for a built 20R with 3,000 miles. (See 1982 Toyota Engine Problem Thread) The 20R has been ported and polished, bored out, high compression pistons put in, and will be running a header and dual side draft carbs. Would this be easier than continuing to fight my stock 82 22R? If so...is it a direct bolt in and bolt up to my 4 speed tranny?

It should bolt on with no problem since your gonna be using your original 4 speed. The 20R motor will have more power than the 22R since it got a dual side draft carb and headers. then with oversize and high compression piston, all you gonna need to complete the package is an aftermarket Cam. If your thinking of Drag racing your truck stay with your 4 speed tranny. But if you wanna conserving fuel go with the 5 speed.

Thanks for the info...i'm gonna stay with the stock 4 speed. I'm not sure if the engine's already cammed up or not...i'l hafta check on that...the engine doesn't come with a header or the carbs but i have them...but is $700 a good deal with all of the performace upgrades ??

Yes, if the is still in a good condition. Check the compression of each cylinder. With a oversize and High compression pistons, compression sholud not be any lower than 160. At $700 thats just the carbs., new ones would cost you more. I know that there are a few differences between 20R and 22R engine beside bigger bore. Head is totally different, in take port and combustion chamber and so on. Also depend on model different piston. But both have interchangeable parts. Whats the wrong with your 22R anyway? Did you check if you can bolt on the twin side draft manifold/ headers?

Need Feedback

The engine is in good condition. It has less than 3,000 miles on it since the rebuild. All engine work was done by the owner of the truck. It has a performance cam and a weber carb on it now. Price was $700 but I've got him down to $350 for the complete engine. Sound like a good deal? If not for immediate swap, just to have for future use? Give me some feedback. Thanks

You'll find that even ported the 20r's ports will be smaller than the 22r, plus the 22r has larger valves. The 20r may be more responsive than the 22r, but above 3000rpm the 22r will walk all over it.

Dual side draft alone would blow away the 22R easily and makes power all the way up to 6000 rpm. Unless the 22R would have the same mods as the 20R. Believe me I've been racing Toyota Celica's and Corolla's since 74. And had modified motors from Corolla's 3K, 2T, 2TG, 2TGTE and 4AG. Celica's 18R, 18RG, 20R, 22RE, 22RTE and 3SGTE. Right now I'm working on 2JZGE motor that I'll put in my 93 pick. My target is over 300HP all motor for my project.

that's like saying more fuel will make a stock vehicle faster, the port and valve sizes are the restriction here.
You are right about the price of the dual side drafts, 5 years ago that setup was a thousand dollars. I grabbed a weber instead, but also tried a small 4 barrel holley, the weber did better

If you can get a 20r with dual sides running for 350, jump all over that, then put the sidedrafts on a 22r

Not just more fuel, but more air too. Because, each cylinder is individually fed by the two carbs, one barrel for each cylinder. You may need to get a different manifold to bolt on your carbs for the 22R, cuz the ports are totally different. I'll get back to you or you check yourself if the bolt pattern and ports would align properly. Also tell us what kinna carbs are they and what size venturi are in it.
