22re issues. Tap and rough idle. Please help

I have a 93 pickup with a 22re. I had a tap coming from the top end so I had the valves adjusted. A couple of weeks later I had a new timing chain, gears, guides, timing cover, etc. installed and the timing was reajusted. The truck ran very smooth at idle. This was about a month ago. I just put on a new exhaust manifold to quiet an exhaust leak and now that the exhaust is quiet, I have another loud tap from the top end. Is it possible that now that I have the new timing chain, etc. And the ignition properly timed, that I will need another valve adjustment, or could it be something else making the noise.

I also just recently had a check engine light come on after all the work was done. I noticed that two wires going to the O2 sensore were broken off at the harness. Not wanting to spend $500 on the new engine harness I spliced the two broken wires. The check engine light went out but the truck has seemed to idle rough ever since. I was wondering if there is maybe a replacement repair pigtail available for this harness or am I stuck with a new engine harness. And, considering that the engine light went out, is this even the cause for the rough idle? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

sometimes if the valve cover is cranked down to tight , the rocker arms can actually contact the cover , causing the noise , also ....

It may be "normal" the injectors also will make a "ticking" noise as they work .

It's not the injector tick I'm hearing, I can pinpoint that. This is a kind of spuratic tap at idle that almost seems to go away when I hit the throttle( I might just not hear it with the engine revving). The truck runs very strong when driving.Just makes a hell of a tap and idles rough.

well to do the valve adjust right , at "higher" milage , requires the replacement of the valve adjustment screws .

On all of the engines I rebuild , I always do this , as well as surfacing the valve stems ...

Engine does have 167,000 on it. Is there anything else I should replace when I have the valve cover off? Would it be better for me to just buy a rebuilt head?

i talked to my local toyota dealer on this problem with my 94 and he said that the adjusters are not the problem. The rockers are either contacting the tinwork inside the rocker cover or most likely i wasnt setting the valves right. the books are NOT right

Intake -0.007 in.
Exhaust-0.011 in.

With a little madification with a die grinder and the new valve lash settings the engine sounds like the day it rolled of the assembly line

Great. Thanks for the info. Specifically, what type of modification are we talking about with the grinder?

well on mine you could see polished marks where the rockers came into contact with the tinwork and corresponding marks on the rockers. i just took a metal grinding wheel and made a small horsehoe type grind where the "shiny" was until i felt it was enough, basically as little as possible. then i cleaned the rocker cover very well with clean stoltered solvent and left it dry overnight, reinstalled it and bam, quiet motor
