1991 PU Truck 22RE idles poorly...

I need help - the timing is off on the truck, and my mechanic checked it out. It's idling about right (a little over 1000 rpm), but it idles lousily. If I turn on the A/C, the car starts shaking, and sometimes just die. My Mechanic told me I might need to have my distributor changed - but he didn't do anything else to adjust the timing. He just increased more air flow (adjusted the air/gas ratio). Is he jerking me around? I'm reading up on the truck right now, but I could really use some help from you pros out there. Where should I adjust the timing? What should I do. Please help.

I'll help if i can, basically on the 22re engine the top dead center of no 1 is at 5 degrees on the damper guage. It will say 0,5,10 and 15. Bring the mark to the 5 and take the cap off and see if the rotor is at no 1 wire. If not and is at no4 wire, you need to go one revolution of crank by turning with the pulleys and bring rotor to no 1. With a timing light on no 1 wire adjust the timing with a warn engine to 10-14 degrees at idle. This is out of my book. If it is incorrect, please chime in. Mine was a tooth off and I couldn't get to 10 degrees without pulling out the distributor and resetting it. Runs perfect now. Mine is a 91 re 5 speed. Tim

I had a similar problem with my 91 22RE. I did a compression check after chasing my tail for a while. I had low compression in one cylinder, the result of a bent intake valve. Do a compression check, its easy and will rule out a few problems.

screwing with the air to fuel will also cause problems that something really unless you have a turbo or something else like that shouldnt be messed with. also with the timming alot of people fould that taking the old distrobuter and punching a hole in it so you see how it is lining up helps alot with timming the engine.

Talking Timing

Fellas, excuse me for not being clear! When timing by shorting the data plug, set at 5 degrees. This eliminates the advance and then take jumper off and check if its 10-14 degrees advanced. My chain is junk as is my housing, broke both guides, laying in pan, cut grooves in housing. Ordered a really good, I think, set from DOA Racing, their set has the steel backed guides and prestreached chain, will be here Sat. For those interested, to remove the pan on the 4x4, jack up the engine as far as possible, drop pan and unbolt pickup tube and lay in pan, unbolt the steering at the pitman arm only and you can get the pan out the front. Tim Jenkins at DOA really knows these toyotas. Tim
