My 99 Tacom Prerunner general help

Hey my name is Eric Bock. I live in Portland Oregon. I have a 99 Tacoma Prerunner. I don't know exactly what it has that's why I am on here to figure that out. I know it has 33x10.5x15 tires, it has front coil overs that look like can adjust up and down to raise or lower the front of the truck, but it doesn't look like normal lift kits. It has an add a leaf in the back. Only bummer is it is a 2 wd truck. It also has custom flared front fenders that I have never seen on another Tacoma. It has the 3.4 liter V6 in it with the TRD package. But I don't see any signs of anything TRD on it. But like I said before I am getting on here to learn about my truck.

The main thing I want to know is why when I go over any bumps does it feel like my truck has no suspention. I replaced the lower ball joints and the guy that did it said that the joints were under stress because of the way it was lifted. He said that after market lower ball joints would be a better Idea. I want to know if I should bother with this or get an actual suspention lift. Also are the coil over adjustable shocks garbage? I don't want to use my truck to climb bolders. Just want it to ride good and get me to where I want to go in the mts.
Thanks,
Eric

I'd revert the setup back to stock, of course, I like to be low to the ground in my cars. If you want to keep the lift, take out what the person before you did to it and then lift it properly, I don't know what properly is, I'm not a truck guy. Maybe someone else will be more of a help.

if the ball joints are under a lot of stress, that probly means that the T-bars are cranked way too much, how much lift is on the truck? the previous owner may have cranked them way too much to fit those tires on there.
BTW, what do you mean no signs of TRD? if it doesnt have 4wd then it probly has rear diff.

prerunners are 2 wheel drive with a 4 wheel drive suspension. if it has the trd package, there should be a button on the dash to activate the rear locker.

Toyota truck

Yeah there is not a button in my truck for the rear lockers. Any how it has about a 3-4 inch lift on it. Does anyone know how hard it is to convert it to a 4wd and if cost wise it would even be worth it. Also what a good lift kit would be to buy to still allow clearence for the 33 inch tires.
Thanks

unless you know alot about vehicles and have good welding skills, if you want a 4 wheel drive, i'd sell your truck and buy a 4 wheel drive. pre-runners can be done, but it takes alot of know how to do.

Lift Kits

Hey I was curious what you guys thought as far as a good lift kit. I heard Fabtech was alright. For a 6 inch lift what would be the total price for parts and install. Thanks.
Eric

there's no welding involved with the prerunner to 4wd conversion....and it's not 6k...my buddy did his for $1500...average price is just around 2k...depends on how big a hurry you are in....

Eric-look at your rear diff...does the drain plug angle down towards the passenger or driver's side? if it's the passenger side, you do not have the TRD model...someone slapped on the sticker...if it drains to the driver's side, then you have the e-locker...there should be a button next to the steering wheel on the left hand side that says "rr diff lock"

secondly, what kind of coilovers do you have? it should say someplace on the coilover...could be they need to be rebuilt...

you should also check out customtacos.com and tacomaterritory.com

my screenname on both is snwbdr...feel free to ask me anything

Looks like the passenger side like I suspected. So what all is involved in converting it to 4 wheel?

to convert to 4wd, you would need a 4x transmission and transfer case(salvageyard$7-800)then you would need both drivelines(appx$200) then a front diff, which if your lucky ,you can find one with the same ratio as your rear diff(figure$3-400) cvc shafts(100$)hubs or add equivelent,a 4-wheel drive computer for youryear of truck(do you have abs on the prerunner?)cuz ifso you need the optional wiring and sensors for the front cvc shafts,and.. that about does it forUSED hardware, and you havent gotten into turning a wrench yet,or cutting a hole in your floor fot the transfer case shifter.Did i scare you yet?believe it or not,i wouldnt do this and i turn wrenches for a living.your dollars and days ahead to sell your prerunner and find a 4wd if thats what you really want.BUT..if you gotta do it keep on posting,&we'll be here to talk ya through it(or laugh with yah)
