^Correcto. You would need the tranny that went with the V6, and I don't know about the xfer case.
BTW, the 3.0 to 3.4 swap isn't all peaches either. The exhaust is totally different, the wiring is totally different, the engine is about 2 inches taller so the hood won't close, and on and on. I'm thinking about doing a write up, since the ones I researched before I did my swap were incomplete. I still got a couple of bugs to work out, like my tach and A/C don't work because they aren't compatible with the new computer. I don't think the fix is complicated, but my electronics knowledge is pretty weak so I need to confer with a more experienced tweaker to come up with the solution.
Mechanically, it's pretty simple. The 3.4 needs the engine mounts, oil pick up, oil pan and dipstick from the 3.0 and then it pretty much drops right in. I used the 3.4 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. I should probably adjust the clutch fork pivot point to get more play in the clutch pedal, but it works and I'm lazy.
I installed a 2" body lift to get the clearance I needed to close the hood.
I then spent a few hours going over the factory manuals for the 3.0 and the 3.4 to figure out how to splice in the wiring harnesses. The engine harnes is easy, it goes through the firewall in the same place as the old one and plugs into the new computer which I turned upside down so the wires would reach. I then needed to splice the original dash harness to the new computer connectors.
Then I plumbed in the fuel system, figured out all the emissions crap like the charcoal canister and such, and routed all the vacuum lines.
I used my original accessories, swapping pulleys where necessary. I used the new alternator, though.
The exhaust had to be completely fabbed. I decided to buy Edelbrock headers, which was a mistake. Crappy build quality. And I had to modify them to even fit since the 96+ chassis is different from the earlier generation. 96 and up has the exhaust going down the passenger side and the xfer case on the driver side. Mine has the exhaust on the driver side and the xfer on the passenger side. I wound up with rebuilt headers(there's more to that story) which I thermal coated, and a whole new 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with new OBD2 Cat(required in CA). A fair amount of work, since I did it myself and I'm not that good. There's more, but I'm kinda tired and can't think of it all right now.
One thing I learned, though, is that you should find a donor vehicle at a wrecker and make arrangements to get EVERYTHING off of it. See if they will hold it a while so you can continue to get parts you need and forgot. One bummer for me is that my engine came from out of town and I wasn't sent everything I needed. Cost me a small fortune to get the rest of the parts. Like the extra wiring connector that goes from the ECU to the dash harness. No one wanted to part with just the connector, so I had to buy the entire friggin dash harness for 200 friggin bux.
Another, was the intake air box and tube didn't come with it(they said it was damaged) so I had to find those as well. I was looking at ANOTHER 200 bux but I found a used K&N intake kit online for 100. Now I might need the A/C amplifier to integrate my A/C system with the 3.4 ECU. Can't wait to see how much that will cost. I'm pretty sure I can fix the tach for cheap, I just need to talk to that electronics tweaker. They chopped the battery cables instead of taking off the terminals. They chopped the rubber fuel line instead of unscrewing it from the hard line. Etc, etc, etc.
Oh yeah, the battery and air box have to switch sides too. More wiring there. And the cruise control cable won't reach the throttle.
Sheesh, I just about wrote the write up there....
enuf for now
