Timing chain cover

Hi,
I have a 88 4 runner with the 22Re engine with 260K.It recently wouldnt start and after tearing down the front of the engine I found what was left of the right side timing chain damper wedged in the crankshaft sprocket. the damper also damaged the part of the timing chain cover that surrounds the crank sprocket.Could I still use the old timing chain cover if there are no leaks?

I would. I've done them before and have always seen the wear lines from the chain slapping the side of the cover. They'll all have grooves worn when the chain guides go bad. The chain cover doesn't retain any real pressure, so use your judgement. Good luck.

Or you could go to a junk yard and pull another cover off of any 22r or 22re or 22ret motor from a truck or celica or cressida. Worst thing you might have to do is clean the dirt and oil off of it. The years to look through are 84- 95 on the trucks and 82 - 87 I think on the cars.

I had the chain wear holes through the timing cover when the grooves got that deep, when I rebuilt it I had the timing cover cleaned and glass beaded and then I filled it in with JB Weld and a putty knife, put on the DOA dual chain and steel guide and now have about 40K on it and all is well.

you can use it as long as there are no leaks. Use steel guides next time. The problem you have is one of the top killers of 22re's

you cant use a timing cover off of a engine that is older than a 85
they have a different deck height, only square valve cover 22r/re's will work

there is a coolant passage where the chain rubs the cover.
this happened to a celica i owned.i just jb welded it and it never leaked.just make sure you let the jb weld set first

Hi,
Thanks for all the help but I`m not sure that I discribed the damage properly.The cover does not have any wear or groove from the chain.However it is the "half moon"raised area that sit directly below where the crank gear goes that has been sheared off.I`m not sure what purpose this raised area served but Isuspect it helps keep the chain covered with oil.With this area missing I don`t know if this would effect lubrication.I suspect this area had been damaged for some time and the guide just took the rest of it out.I have called every junk yard I could think of with no luck.I don`t really want to invest in a new part for this geriatric vehicle if I don`t have to.
