starter problem

Hey guys,

Im new to the board and I have a question. I have a 98 Tacoma ext 4x4. I try to crank my truck but I keep getting a clicking sound, like my battery is dead. I keep trying to crank it and eventually it will crank (somedays are better than others). I know it is not my battery cause all of the lights, cd player, and everything works. I also cleaned the battery terminals in case of a bad connection. I have come to the conclusion that it has to do with the starter or the cylinoid for the starter.

Has anyone had this happen to them before and if so what was the bad part. I am in college and I do the work on my truck by myself so I am trying to make sure I have pinpointed the problem before I start replacing parts.

I'm with you--I'd rather find the problem before replacing parts. First, check for loose or corroded connections: ground, solenoid etc. Are your cables in good condition? Your battery might be weak, tho if it will eventually start, that is not likely. A voltage check while cranking might tell you something. I have had similar problems when the battery connections were not tight enough or deformed enough that they couldn't be tightened adequately. Try measuring the voltage at the solenoid and starter connections while it is just clicking.

After I read your post I searched a little on here and decided to change my solenoid connections. It turned out that it was the problem and now my truck is running like new.

This happened to my truck. Inside the starter are two copper contacts and one wears down. You can get the two contacts from toyota for like 13 bucks. Easy to replace.

Whether your starter uses two rectangular types or one rectangular and one crescent you can substitute with two squares or one square and one crescent so any of the above part #'s for those kits will be the right ones,or about half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages would sell aftermarket contacts for only $5 each or the pair.


If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.
