Code 12 Knock Control Sensor

Have 87 RV with 22-RE. Code 12 says "Knock Control Sensor." I assumed that was spark knock. Book says timing should be 5 degrees BTC. Can only stop code 12 by setting timing to 5 degrees After Top Dead Center. Any suggestions? Where would I look for the knock sensor if it is defective?

The FSM (factory service manual) and the emission's sticker underneath the hood state that the engine timing should be 5 degrees BTDC with check engine/timing connector shorted and 8 degrees without, that is the norm. The knock sensors never fail and are located near the oil filter but the wire harness does as it common on Toyotas.

Engine timing is set at 5 BTDC with engine/timing connector shorted. Check engine light comes on and will produce the code 12, (Knock Sensor Control). Has to be something other than timing.
