i gotta 91 ext cab 3.0 v6 pickup. the truck acted weird 3 weeks ago was driving aproxmatley 60mph and did a quick hesitation 2 times in row. then acted fine for another 3 weeks and did same thing. the check engine light came on bout week before the 2cd time it ever done this then came off few days later..then bout 4 days later after i parked it and it wouldnt start next morning.. it had no spark coming from the cap but did out of the coil. so i changed the rotor button, cap and wires..wich needed it anyway and dry it out..it is only gettin spark out of the cap from 3 of the 6 plug wires and wont start.. any help would be apreciated.. im thinking its prob the distribitor but hear alot bout the ignitor but wondering if its gettin fire from the coil seems like it prob the distributor...but looks like the ignitor runs from the coil to the cap alsoim not really sure this is something new for me im a new toyota truck guy and love this truck. but the parts are outrageous for some little parts like the ignitor is 200 to 300 ..and also could it be the computer? i brought it to a mechanic and he said its prob the distributor or computer.. i just dont wanna pay smoething outrageous u know.. so im thinking this is something common for most 91 era trucks...it also has 235k miles on it but drove like new.. thanks.. ill check back.
About half of the ECU codes stored on the first & second generation EFI Toyotas don't show a constant blinking check engine light therefore you must pull the ECU codes and auto tranny computer codes to see if a fault is registered.
To pull the ECU codes:
All 1980-1995 and including 1995 EFI equipped vehicle allow you to find engine and related faults by pulling the ECU (computer) codes without the need for a handheld OBDII diagnosis scanner,the sites listed below have the fault codes needed to pull the codes and the instructions on how to do it:
Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual.This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.
Any public library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells and Toyota repair books.

Sidney, are you out there. Your repeating of posts (long posts) is killing me. If you have some specific help for someone, give it to them in plain English! How many different threads have you posted to pull the codes? If you have a web site to share, GREAT! But we don't need all 1001 of them.

Most of these "newbies" don't bother to read the older threads if they did we would only have half the threads,as well I frequent many sites and most people follow my advice and pin point the problem for some reason on this site people don't take the info seriously.Secondly I post many links as each link has a different viewpoint on a problem and different diagrams or pictures which aids the person alot.
Third if you think you can do better then help the posters out instead of making comments as I have learned alot from these 4-Runner/pickup discussion sites and would like to pass on my knowledge and help,I saved a ton of money and headaches as many local mechanics ripped me off so much so many times.They also ripped off many people I know including my local Toyota dealership.
Finally these posters ask basic questions like where can a buy this or that but they don't specify what part of the USA or Canada they are at so I place all of the sources which took me lots of time in research to come up as well there are readers who benefit from my replies,to be honest while reading all of the old posts on this Truck/SUV section my replies seem to be the most accurate,if you think you can do better than help the fellow posters out.

i got it at a mechanics. dropped it off thursday but he couldnt get to it till friday.. said its prob the distributor and will look for one monday.. but called him today he said call back tommorow...he said either the dist or computer.. why cant people just narrow it down and get it done...
About half the mechanics in Canada & USA are not qualified anyone can open a garage and call themselves a mechanic,these are usually the old timer mechanics who grew up on carburators and not EFI (from around 1980 & up) so when confronted with an EFI equipped vehicle they don't know how to troubleshoot so they resort to trial and error basically taking a guess at your expense and in the process creating more problems.
Toyota ECU (EFI computers) are very realiable and seldom fail,either your distributor is faulty,it's system's or something else but not your ECU,trust me.If your mechanic like I told you earlier took a voltmeter and ohm meter and measured all of the voltages and resistances at the ECU he would off found the problem by now.I suggest you call your local autoparts stores and borrow their handheld OBDI or II diagnosis scanner as many local auto parts stores have a "Loan A Tool Program" where they will lend you many tools for 24 hours if you put a deposit down.If you cannot find an OBDI or II diagnosis to borrow contact your local community college/vocational school and they will diagnose and fix your car for free at their car mechanic course.
If else fails find an honest and competent mechanic who knows what he is doing.
