how do you clean out the black crud?

I have my intake apart and am cleaning out that black crud (where the he** does it come from, anyway?). How do you clean out the large chamber after the butterfly? I've tried getting in with a brush (yeah, right!) and solvent, now I'm trying engine cleaner, then hot water. Any tips?

Carb Cleaner.... Works on everything. Used it many times on various other jobs, and so far it's been able to take everything off, no matter what the hell it was.

The black stuff is oily blowby and atomized oil particles that have been purged from the engine through the PCV valve and sucked into the engine (yet another reason to use a Factoy Toyota PCV ). Also in the the 4-cycle process, there is a short time when both intake and exhaust valves are open.

I doubt that most street engines would gain any performance from a spotless intake. Just remove the crud from the butterfly area, and an inch or so back. The only real way to remove it is to remove the offending part, and have it media blasted with something like crushed walnut shells.

Carb cleaners work good, but you may also want to try an overnight treatment with "fuel injector cleaner". What I mean is the liquid stuff you are supposed to pour into your gas tank. Unlike a convenient aerosol that made to evapoate, the liquid will take its time and penetrate the gunky deposits. Try bathing a cotton towel/old t-shirt pieces and stuff them into the areas needing a clean. finish up w/carb cleaner. You should keep all solvents away from the TPS, and one should disable the vehicle to prevent careless towel-sucking.

Carbon build up occurs with lots of city miles combined with low octane gasoline.

To clean the throttle body remove the air intake hose and examine the intake and throttle body for excessive carbon build if found then buy a can of throttle body cleaner labeled "safe on oxygen sensors,TPS's and catalytic converters" do not use carb cleaner make sure your engine is fully warmed up prior to using as when the throttle body is hot it dissolves the carbon easily and quickly.The labels usually specify to park the vehicle at ground level (0 degrees,no inclination) and have the engine running but I disagree I instead park the vehicle on a hill facing down and shut the engine off and hold a rag below the lip of the throttle body and poor the stuff and use a tooth brush.
