Unhappy 1990 toyota 4 cylinder pickup carburetor replacement

I own a 1990 4 cylinder 2wd with a 22R engine. It has just over 141,000 miles. For the past several weeks the fuel milage has gone down. A tuneup and fuel flush was done, but with little affect. the mechanic suggests a carburetor replacement is needed. The symptoms I see are: backfiring on shifting from 3rd to 2nd and/or releasing the gas peddle for braking. There is also a rich gas smell around the exhaust. The last thing i noticed is that during idle it sounds like it wants to die. I am wondering if i can order a replacement kit from napa or if I should just order a rebuilt one. I need the truck to last a couple of more years for my teenage son. One other question is the adjustment screws that can make the mixture richer/leaner. how can I make the adjustments by "sound" of engine at idle

Go with a Weber

If you are going to replace the carb. Check your local parts store and/or ebay for a 32/36 mm carb. you'll get increased power and fuel economy. You'll aslo need an adapter from carb to manifold, but you can get that at your local auto parts store. I recently put one of these webers on my 1982 Toyota 2wd with the 22R. It made a world of differnece.

I must be having the same problem. my calif. emissions test came back as running real rich. my toyota is an 86' carburated but I also have to keep stock for smog reasons, I am assuming a rebuild should help, 190,000 on original carb, runs real good but fuel is going through a diaphram I think, is the weber calif legal

'87 was the last year for carbs on 4WD models, '90 was the last year on 2WD models.

I have right now a 90 and a 91. The 90 "was" carbed and the 91 is FI. I now have on my 90 a Holley 650 CFM DBL pumper. and it runs great

I actually did some shopping on ebay and ended up with a good used 32/36 for $130. I then had to purchase the carb to manifold adapter and i put a rebuild kit in it just to be safe. I also had to get the throttle linkage adapter.
