A distributor can be installed a bunch of times, and STILL not be right. Take an OLD distributor cap and cut/drill an inspection hole in the #1 position. Punching out the metal terminal first will help.

Line up the crank @ 0 degrees on the #1 compression stroke, install the distributor, and ensure the rotor and #1 cap tower are directly over each other.

I had a similar problem after a HG replacement, and this process worked perfect! Total cost:$0.00

distributor help

ok i brought it in and had the timing checked.. and it runs much better but it still has a problem..its on time but still backfires out of exhaust little..and misses out.. it didnt do this before the distributor went out.. only after i replaced it.. and it has new cap ,button, wires n plugs..and timing was set.. and a different distributor was put in..not sure what else to do.. one thing i was wondering could the distributor been put in wrong like on the wrong gear.tooth or whatever but still be in time.. would there be any difference.. just wondering...but i would like to fix this but it gets expensive trying to fix simple things like this..
