help with charging the battery

ok hi all. sorry if this is the wrong place for this I want help and figured best place to come is a forum.

I have a 87' toyota pickup, r22 motor. I recently tried to pull it out of the moth balls. been like 3 years. and the alternator was frozen. I took it in and got it rebuilt. yet when I was putting it back in I, being new to working on cars, didn't disconect the battery. I saw a spark, which I didn't think much of. now after the alternator is hooked up I don't get a charge at all.
help.

second) it idled fine in the driveway. yet as I went down the street it didn't want to idle at all. everytime I stoped it killed. then I heard it hicup and then it got louder. the pipe disconected from the catalitic(sp?) converter in the front of it. now it runs fine. does this mean I need to get a new catalitic converter? or was it just presure or something or huh help is apreciated.
