question regarding locking rear differential

I have a 2004 tacoma double cab with the rear locking diff. When I put the truck into 4lo and then select the locking diff the light just blinks, but if I turn off the locking diff and spin the tires, then try the diff again it seems to lock after that. Is this normally how it works or should I take back to the dealer? It seems you should be able to enable it before you get stuck, although the books says only to use after you have gotten stuck and tried 4hi and 4lo. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

thats normal toyota operation.I too found this insufficent.if you look up4x4 review discussion boards-and find tacoma grey wire mod, it will tell you how to modify your truck so that the e-locker stays on when the button is pushed, regardless of speed or trans case selection. that helped me alot in the sand...

I did see a article on customtacos.com about this, it looked pretty easy to do. I just wanted to make sure that everything functions the way it should. I will probably change the wiring when the warranty runs out. Thanks for the help.
