truck problems

hey guys, been poking around here for about a year now, try to help out where I can but now I'm having problems with the ol rig and could use a little myself.

here goes: I have a 1987 Toyota 4X4. I put a new 22r in her about 40k ago, new tranny soon after but.. now she wont idle. at stoplights, in the driveway, just doesnt like stopping I guess. if I give her gas she'll run like a champ but as soon as I lett off she quits. when it started happening I was really low on gas, when I unscrewed the cap I got that sucking sound, filled her up and she ran fine for about a day. then it started happening again. so I popped the gas cap off again, same sound, but no joy, still doesnt idle. I thought the gas tank might not be venting right because of a faulty gas cap or something and might be creating a vaccuum that was fighting the fuel delivery but nope... took the cap off, drove her around, still no joy. I'm thinking its in some way fuel delivery related but hey. worst thing is, right after this started happening I got deployed (navy) and now my girlfriend is stuck with the problem. she's pretty good under the hood so I thought I'd ask here and point her in the right direction.

just a couple of things, I havnt checked the fuel pressure yet (no pressure gauge in the shop yet) havnt checked compression yet (dont see why it'd be bad), have extra plugs but didnt have time to put em in (now they're burried in storage) and I couldnt find the dang fuel filter (anyone know where the heck that little buggers at?) oh well, am I atleast going in the right direction here? anyone have similar problems? right now its just a pain in the but at stoplights (I've driven worse vehicles) but I'd hate to see this turn into a bigger mess. you know how engine troubles go... its starts with this then that happens, then.... and so on. but yeah. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch!

I don't think you have a problem getting enough fuel. That would be most noticeable at higher speeds, not at idle. You said you had a 22R engine. That means you have a carburetor. I would check the float level. There is a sight glass on the side of the carb. It can be adjusted without dismantling the carb. If the fuel level is too high, that could cause idling problems. If it was right and has recently gone bad, your float is saturated or leaky, depending on the type you have. If so, resetting the level will be a temporary fix, if the float is not so far gone that you can't adjust it. Then the fix is to install a new float.

If that isn't your problem, let us know. I will be scratching my head for a while.

could also be a vaccum leak ... I would take some "cold start" and do a little spraying arount the vaccum lines and carb base , and intake and such ... if you notice a idle change when spraying .. you'll have found your leak .

Could also be the AAP. I had a similar problem with the 22R. What I can suggest is to check the auxiliary accelerator pump (AAP). Basically, if you can figure out where to vacuum line attached to the AAP on the carb, take a small piece of hose, (detach the current hose) attach a small piece of hose, and try sucking through it. If you get a mouth of gasoline, you need to replace the AAP diaphram. Should be 3 screws - but be careful because the diaphram is sping loaded - not high tension - but just be sure you put it back the way it was. This fix is for problems occuring when the engine is cold. It the problem goes away when warmed up - it is a dead ringer for this problem. Easy fix, just kind of award to get to. Hope this helps.
