timing belt or just ran out of gas

My 16 yr old son ran his 91 toyota 4 cylinder 4x4 p/u out of gas. After putting gas in it only runs for 4 seconds then fades out. Our mechanic said it is probably the timing chain. How do we get it started? Obviously it is fuel injected.

I would check the fuel filter(s). I'd probably look for another mechanic, too. Unless I am overlooking something, this does not sound like a timing problem.

Yeah, sounds fishy to me too. I would change out the fuel filter and run a can of F.I. cleaner to clean out all that crap that got clogged in the F.I. I'd run the cleaner in 2 consecutive tanks to make sure it's extra clean.

Along with the cleaner I would run 91 octane due to the hotter burn off it will help burn off anything the cleaner don't get.

I am still on the 91 p/u. The fuel pump pumps the filter is clean, new plugs and wires, new alternator, there is spark. The NEW mechanic says it's the computer. It doesn't appear that the computer that controls the injection points isn't working. Am I safe to buy a computer off E-bay. And how close should the serial numbers match. can a 4runner computer be used. I am still trying not wring my sons neck, so please help

you might ask the new mechanic to check the relays before you spring for a new computer.running the truck out of gas shouldnt kill the computer, but ive seen guys fry relays by cranking the dogs*** out of the starter, thereby causing the symptoms you decribe.i believe in your truck their located in the underhood fusebox, they are similar in appearance to a hazard or signal flasher, they plug in and out with a 4- prong connection.Buying a computer off e- bay is iffy, can you return it if it doesnt work, or not solve your problem? probably not.. car parts stores wont allow returns on electrical parts either

hey Greasygreg,
Thanx for the info. Exactly how many 4 prong relays are there?

Maybe its the distributor/ignition coil?

When you say it "turns over but doesn't catch", does it sound like it always has in the past? If the timing chain is broken, it will sound different. Normally, the engine sounds like it is "working" ie the compression of the cylinders causes it to spin at various speeds (kinda hard to explain actually). When the timing chain is broken, the engine spins freely and usually faster. This results in a different sounding engine.

OK.... but can you explain to us (or me anyway) how running out of gas will mess up the timing chain? Or was it just a coincidence?

I hate to add this to your sad sorrow, but this probably means that you now have bent valves.22r's are "interference"engines, meaning that if your pistons/valves get out of sequence you bend stuff.best thing to do is while you have the engine apart for the chain, take off the head and bring it to a machine shop.

you got it mixed up
a high octane runs cooler with a longer burn. it was deighned for 87. If you go to 91 octane you need to reset the timing put new cams and get cooler range plug to compsate correcly. stick with the 87
