My first thought was that the timing belt must have jumped, upsetting the timing. Resetting the ignition timing would probably make it run again. I don't know how many times you could go through this routine before the mechanical timing would be too far off, though. My guess is that, since the truck is due for a new timing belt, that if you replace it, you will see the problem when it is apart.

it must suckto be you guys.if you do go crazy, maybe theyll put you in a rubber room with yoyota emblems emblazed in the walls, and then you can bounce off them all day,!sorry thats a lame reply, but you might be on the right track with the timing belt.I dont know about the 3.0, but i do know that on 22r's if the timing is more than a tooth off mecanically with the chain;you end up bending valves.I'd probably get the manual, changing the belt does require a puller for the crank pulley,so its a fairly complecated procedure, and good mecanics arent cheap.Toyota recommends timing belts at 60 thousand miles, but they'll go a LOT longer, how mant miles on your rig?

236k miles.. heres one thing that could be the problem.. when it broke down it was only gettin spark from half the wires coming out of the cap..so i replaced the distributor with a USED one..replaced it and timed it.. but runs like crap then got worst where i gotta advance the timing to get it started..and hesitant could i bought a bad distributor? to cause it to be adjusted each day to start and run like crap once its timed..or coil my next purchase or belt replacement ...jalsdfjlkasdfjlkasf

doesnt sound like an easy fix, but my thought is that you shouldnt have to change the timing to start it.i hope that the engine hasnt jumped timing on you.im the wrong end of the horse to ask, but id suggest putting the crank on the notch for the timing mark, and unscrewing the cap to make sure its pointing the right direction and go from there.if theres a napa store nearby, they'll check the coil for free.Good luck!

If it is running at all, I would expect the rotor to be pointing at #1 with the notch on the timing mark. It sounds like something is moving when you run it after setting the timing. The only thing I can think of is the belt slipping, but maybe there is something else? I helped a guy change the belt on another vehicle once and he didn't get it together right and something caused the belt to jump a notch. It didn't damage that engine, just caused it to run rough, with little power.

BTW, I think the cost of replacing the belt in the 3.0 V6 is around $150.

Good luck. Be sure to let us know what you find.
