22R designation

The 22R was the 2.4 carb 4cyl.

22RE was the 2.4 EFI 4cyl

Can't remember the exact thing for the deisel - 22RTE maybe?

The RTE is Turbo, not diesel.

As far as nomenclature, SR5 means a pickup with more stuff. There are no set standards as to what an SR5 pickup actually IS over the years. The SR5 designation in its early 1980's meant you gotta 5 speed tranny. A lot of SR5's have upgraded dashes with tachometers, plusher interiors etc....

My own 1984 is a DLX...a level between the base model and the SR5 of the time. It has carpet and bucket seats like an SR5 would have, but does not have a tach, fancier armrests... The DLX does not exist as a line anymore.

As far as this whole SR5 thing goes, the designation became so common, that Toyota brought out its "Limited" line of vehicles that are loaded with features that lots of people (not me) like.

If you were to compare it to what Chevy has done over the years, you could say the older, top of the line pickup was always The Silverado. Chevy had the Cheyenne, Custom Deluxe and countless other trim/performance levels. NOW, in the modern day, the entire line is called Silverado! All these companys experience technology creep, and this is how they deal with it.

Engines used by Toyota for U.S. minitrucks/4Runners from 1964 to present:

3RC - 1.9l OHV carbed 4-cylinder ('64-'69)
8RC - 1.8l SOHC carbed 4-cylinder ('70-'71)
18RC - 2.0l SOHC carbed 4-cylinder ('72-'74)
20R - 2.2l SOHC carbed 4 cylinder ('75-'80)
22R - 2.4l SOHC carbed 4-cylinder ('81-'90)
22RE - 2.4l SOHC EFI 4-cylinder ('84-'95)
22RTE - 2.4l SOHC EFI turbocharged 4-cylinder ('86-'87)
1L - 2.2l diesel 4-cylinder ('81-'83)
2L - 2.4l diesel 4-cylinder ('84-'85)
2L-T - 2.4l turbodiesel 4-cylinder ('85-'86)
3VZ-E - 3.0l SOHC EFI V6 ('88-'95)
5VZ-FE - 3.4l DOHC EFI V6 ('95.5-'04)
2RZ-FE - 2.4l DOHC EFI 4-cylinder ('95.5-'04)
3RZ-FE - 2.7l DOHC EFI 4-cylinder ('95.5-'04)
????? - 2.7l DOHC EFI 4-cylinder ('05)
1GR-FE - 4.0l DOHC VVTi EFI V6 ('03-present)
2UZ-FE - 4.7l DOHC EFI V8 ('03-present)

I'm drawing a blank for the nomenclature for the new 2.7l engine. Perhaps someone can fill these in.

When it comes to most auto parts, it usually won't make squat difference whether you've got an SR5 or not, it is just a trim package. Something else to consider, Toyota made a car simply called an SR5 in the 80's. Actually it was Tercel SR5, but there were no Tercel badges to be found on it. Don't confuse the car with the trim package found on many other Toyota models.
