I would like to revive this thread. I seem to be having a similar issue:
When I got the truck (1982 Toyota with 22R, carb), the idle was set way high, I guess to prevent it from stalling when cold. The choke appears to be ok. Closes when cool, opens after starting. I even tried putting a manually operated choke in.
No vacuum leaks.
Fast idle sets correctly, then, when switching to curb idle, it dies. I have to start it again and hold the gas until, suddenly, the idle smoothes out, and it runs like new.
It's like there is some device there that suddenly gets activated and makes it all better.
I was thinking of a list of things that happen as the engine warms up. Kind of as a checklist of what goes on:
- Electric choke opens (ok)
- Choke opener forces choke open (probably ok since choke is already open when this problem happens)
- Thermostat opens when coolant reaches operating temperature (relevant??)
- EGR valve (?)
What else am I missing? What makes it suddenly run fine when it reaches a certain point?

It smokes terribly and loads up if it is not cleaned out by revving the engine, until it warms up and then it runs like a gem and gets good gas mileage, except that the idle is too high (I believe the idle is turned up to prevent stalling when cold). I have checked the vacuum hoses and other possible sources of vacuum leaks and all look good. It doesn't appear to be the choke, because it does the same thing if I manually force the choke open and the choke comes opens as it is warming up. Please help, I really need to find the problem, it's awful when I start this thing up at the campsite and smoke out all my neighbors.
