Question 1980 22R Cold Starting Hesitation

I have a 1980 RV w/ 18,900 miles on it, setting on a Toyota chassis. When starting the 22R engine cold, it is hard to start and idles/runs very rough when cold. The carburetor looks like it is flooded when it is cold. It smokes terribly and loads up if it is not cleaned out by revving the engine, until it warms up and then it runs like a gem and gets good gas mileage, except that the idle is too high (I believe the idle is turned up to prevent stalling when cold). I have checked the vacuum hoses and other possible sources of vacuum leaks and all look good. It doesn't appear to be the choke, because it does the same thing if I manually force the choke open and the choke comes opens as it is warming up. Please help, I really need to find the problem, it's awful when I start this thing up at the campsite and smoke out all my neighbors.

In 1980 toyota trucks had a 20r in them ... 22r wasnt untill 1981 .

with that said , if you can confirm the engine , that would be very helpfull .

with the 20r the choke system worked off of coolant temp , the 22r was electric choke . I would start there .

The 22R carb has a sight glass to check the float level. I don't know about the 20R. It wouldn't hurt to check.

It is definitly a 22R, it is a 1980 according to the title, although the date of manufacture is mid 1981.

ok so if it is mid 81 production , its actually an /81 .. I would think the papers are mistaken in calling it an /80 ... not a big deal unless you want the correct parts .

I would check the choke opperation , to make sure the electrical is connected and is working . It could just be gummed up and need a cleaning ..
There is also the AAP diaphram ... I would also check for pin holes .

hmmm sorry , I just read your first post again ... and obviously you checked the choke ...

AAP diaphram usually causes a loss in fuel economy as well , and you not experiencing that ... your tail pipe is not black and sooted up I assume then ?

how is the oil consumption ... have you noticed any differance , using oil ? or loss of power ?

22R cold running problems

I would like to revive this thread. I seem to be having a similar issue:

When I got the truck (1982 Toyota with 22R, carb), the idle was set way high, I guess to prevent it from stalling when cold. The choke appears to be ok. Closes when cool, opens after starting. I even tried putting a manually operated choke in.

No vacuum leaks.

Fast idle sets correctly, then, when switching to curb idle, it dies. I have to start it again and hold the gas until, suddenly, the idle smoothes out, and it runs like new.

It's like there is some device there that suddenly gets activated and makes it all better.

I was thinking of a list of things that happen as the engine warms up. Kind of as a checklist of what goes on:

- Electric choke opens (ok)
- Choke opener forces choke open (probably ok since choke is already open when this problem happens)
- Thermostat opens when coolant reaches operating temperature (relevant??)
- EGR valve (?)

What else am I missing? What makes it suddenly run fine when it reaches a certain point?
