Power loss with larger tires
I drive a 2003 Tacoma 4x4 with the TRD package. I'm looking at putting a 3" suspension lift on my truck so I can fit larger tires on. Currently I haven't changed anything; I've got the LT265/70R16 on the vehicle.
My question is about the power loss and gear ratio changes if I install a larger tire on the truck. I've been researching possible tires larger than the 265 after installing the 3" suspension lift. From what I understand, there is a point of diminishing returns with the tire size. The larger tire on the wheel, the harder the engine has to work to turn it, thus an overall decrease in my acceleration.
Is this a correct way to look at that? And if that is correct, is there a recommended maximum tire size for the 03 Tacoma's engine output?
Also, would I need to change my gear ratio after installing larger tires to maintain my current power going to the wheels?
