Yes, that is a common problem with the 22RE. I have had several crack on me over the years. Also you can't weld the cast iron manifold effectively. The head studs and nuts also tend to come loose and strip. If you remove and replace the manifold be sure to remove and install new stud screws with the proper hightemp locktite and torque specs. The old studs will have lost any elasticity and if overtorqued or overheated will strip out.

I say leave the studs in place if at all possible! Soak the fasteners with PB Blaster for as many days as possible. Do not drive the truck at this time to keep the penetrant from cooking off.

If you do strip one of those studs out, you are looking at a headache. Lots of shops cannot/will not helicoil the damaged aluminum threads with the cylinder head in the truck.

I do recommend new nuts from the dealer.

No. This is not a common problem at all. I've never even heard it happening to anyone at all except for the above poster.

Follow torque specs much?

I'm guessing no.

Actually this is a common problem on the 22R-E. I have been working for Toyota Motor Corporation for about 7 years and this is a problem that existed since 1985 since the first Pick Up's and Celica's came out. It is a good idea to use the PB Blast or Toyota Penetrating Liquid available at any dealer. Torque is 37ft/lbs for the exhaust nuts. There are a couple of aftermarket vendors that carry a replacement unit but dont expect it to last as long as the OE one. Good Luck!

The only manifolds that I have seen crack on the R engines is the 4-into-1 type, but never on the 4-2-1 oem manifold. Have your manifold resurfaced to be sure it's flat before re&re-ing the gasket, etc..
