speedometer not working

I am having a problem with a 1993 tacoma 4 cylinder, 5 speed in which the speedometer and odometer have stopped working completely. The truck is my sister-in-laws and I have not been able to look at it yet. She took it to a garage in south carolina and they mechanic told her it could be the wiring or several other things. I was thinging maybe the speed sensor, anyone else have a similar problem or know how to fix problem. Mechanic told her there would be a $100 fee just to diagnose problem. She will be driving up here to NY for thanksgiving, so any help would be appreciated.

I just had my speedo out of my 92 and had a new piece of glass put on, and to get it uot, you need to take off the dash panel on top, it comes off by popping it out, and 1 screw hidden behind the a/c / heater control cover. (the plastic piece that shows what your heat/ac knobs do.) Pop the dash off and unplug the wires from the buttons on the dash. You then have access to 4 screws that hold the guage cluster to the truck. Take out those, and there will be 4 wiring harnesses plugging into hte back of the cluster. Id check them and make sure all 4 harnesses are hooked up and hooked up correctly. also while you have it off, check out the back of the cluster for any popped out pieces or the "plugs " as i call them back there just to make sure. Id do all this first, its a good start to diagnose the problem and/or fix it.
