Clutch install help

I've been asked by a friend to install a clutch on his 95 toyota pickup and I was hoping someone would have a writeup or a few pointers. I've worked on hondas for friends but never done a clutch in a rear wheel drive vehicle before. Got any advice?

pressure plate

The only thing that you will have to pay close attention to is the pressure plate orrientation. The 22re flywheel has a large enough recess cut into it that you can and a lot do, install the pressure plate backwards. Whichever unit you purchase, besure you loole for the markings (flywheel side). The rest is easy. Tim

Well today I removed the driveshaft, shifter, slave cylinder, starter, tranny mount, exhaust, and all the bolts from the transmission housing and I still can't get it out. It doesn't seem like there is enough room to drop the tranny. Is there something that I am missing?

Did you disconnect the battery and remove the starter? Also note that tim1 mis-stated that the pressure plate could be installed backwards. That is absolutely false.
The clutch disc has a front/back and must be oriented correctly to clear the release fingers on the pressure plate. The pressure plate can only be installed one way but, remember to mark its position on the flywheel so you can replace it in the original spot. Good luck.

Yes I disconnected the starter and the battery. I'm only having a problem sliding the bell housing out. I think it's hitting the firewall. I'm going to look at it in the morning, maybe I'll just have to drop a motor mount.

Thumbs down clutch in backwards

To Gregory M, bud I hate to say this to you, but if you took my clutch out, you would see that I know what I'm talking about. It is entirely possible to install this driven disc backwards. Your sympton will be pedal at the floor to disengage, however it will hold the load under excelleration. When I got my truck, the guy had just replaced the engine and said he guessed at the driven disc orientation. He guessed wrong. I replaced it and install it correctly and pedal is where its supposed to disengage and works great.Been doing this stuff for 30 years. You may have to remove the motor mounts to lower the back low enough to get the bellhousing out. I pulled my motor because of a motor delema. Tim

Question pressure plate or driven disc?

Oh, sorry for the confusion, I meant driven disc. Greg is correct, the pressure plate go on one way. Tim
