Just bought an 88 truck with a 22 RE and I can hear a tick from the engine when I have the hood up. Truck runs fine and I have been driving a 99 volkswagon so I am used to an engine I can't hear at all. Appreciate any info
I have an 89 22RE with 425,000 km on it, it ticks as well, but runs wonderful and burns no oil. It has made this noise for a couple years now, near as I can figure the roscker springs are old and a bit sloppy. I have adjusted the valves and it makes no difference in the noise.
I had a '79 Celica I bought used with 41,000 miles on it. It ticked the day I bought it and it ticked the day I gave it to a friend with 250,000 miles on it. It still ticks today with close to 350,000 miles on the clock.

im the same way i hate ticks in my engine but i know that any engine with solid lash adjustors is going to be noisier than the hydraulic lash adjustors like they have in the nissan trux and such. the good thing about the adjustable type is you can use a different cam grind to fit your needs and driving style. thats just my 2 cents. btw e bay has some good deals on performance camshafts for about 70 bux plus shipping.
hi i just checked the valve clearences in my 22r and discoverd the oil splash guard in the top of the rocker cover is hiting the rockers. after panel beating the offending areas i still had a tick in the engine. losening the rocker cover nuts with the engine running the noise went away dont no if there is a torqe setting for these but maybe they are to tight hope this helps
It could be the timing chain broke it's plastic guide and is now contacting (slapping) the walls of the head. That's what making the ticking sound. This is a common problem with the 22re's. Many people will go with the double row chain conversion to avoid stretching of the chain.
I've had the ticking noise ever since I've owned my truck and haven't had any problems. I also think it's coming from the injectors. Thats where the noise seems to be localized.

injectors can be noisy, they sell new grommets and o rings which may stop some of the the vibration from old hardened rubber seals.. ?? just an idea ? solid rockers and timing chains are the most common problem though.
Ever yota I've ever heard as a tick, never causes any problems and they all seem to run fine. That's just kinda their trademark
had a mazda that has a similar setup with the solid lash adjustors and it ticked the same way i tried everything it ran fine always did untill it got demolished by an old lady.
