First post so bear with me! I have a 1990 P/U 4wd with a 22re EFI motor. The problem i'm having is that when it gets warm the idle hunts between 1300-800 rpm. The really wierd issue is that it will only do it when i have my foot on the brake pedal. And when you pull the brake light fuse out it goes away. I see that the ECU gets a signal from the brake lights...maybe computer issue?

Anyone come across this problem?...please help!
DUDE IVE BEEN HAVEN A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH MY TRUCK ITS A 94 22RE 2WD EFI . IT IDLES REAL ROUGH AT START UP AND UNTILL IT COMES TO OPERATING TEMP ABOUT WHEN THE THERMOSTAT OPEN ITS WILL SMOOTH OUT SLIGHTLY BUT ITS NOT REALLY SMOOTHED OUT IT JUST IDLES HIGHER IN THE RPM BAND WHERE ITS SMOOTHER. IF I TURN THE AIR ADJUSTOR SCREW. IVE CHANGED ALL MY PLUGS WIRES DISTRIBUTOR , DISTRIBUTOR CAP, ROTOR , WIRES AIR FILTER AND THE PCV VALVE. AND IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING I HAVENT TRIED THE BRAKE FUSE THING BUT I THINK I WILL TOMARROW. I KNOW THERE ARE A FEW OTHERS THAT HAVE THIS POBLEM BUT I HAVE YET TO HEAR A REASON WHY OR HOW TO FIX IT. IM GOING TO GUESS IF ITS ELECTRICAL ITS PROBABALY SOMETHING LIKE A BAD GROUND OR ONE OF THE SOLENOIDS. IM WONDERING IF THE BRAKE SYSTEM HAS A A SAFETY DEVICE OR SOMETHING INCORPORATED WITH THE COMPUTER THAT WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKES IT DROPS THE RPM'S TO ACT KIND OF LIKE AN ENGINE BRAKE . IM THINKING IT MAY ALSO BE AN O2 SENSOR BUT CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG IF A SENSOR IS BAD IT WOULD THROW THE ENGINE LIGHT ON. I KNOW SOMEBODY KNOWS THE ANSWER ITS JUST A MATTER OF FINDING THEM OR HOPEFULL THEM FINDING US.
I don't know about the brake relation, but I came to this board for the same reason. Idle was up and down 800-1500 rpm and sometimes would hang at 2k. Turned out I had low coolant and that was the problem. Now I can't find where my coolant is going and now it misses on some start ups for a few seconds.
I'm hoping it's not a head gasket. Gonna investigate a little more tomorrow. No coolant smoke or smell out the exhaust.
Anyway.. wanted to throw the fact coolant level affects your idle as well.

i appreciate the info sounds like alot of variables to screw with im going to try the o2 sensor next. maby th ecoolant temp sensor has something to do with it. who knows i may end up taking it to a mechanic.
i have the simalar problem with my 22re. when i start it up sometimes, it will go to 500 rpm then just die out. like it's out of gas. the only way to get it start is to immediatly get on the pedal, and it will run like a bag of shi*t for a little bit then smoothout. it almost sounds like it's misfiring or not getting fuel, but the weird thing is, it only does it when the engine is warm. cold starts like a champ.
i have the same problem and i just rebuilt my engine but i also have trouble warm starting if i drive on the highway or go wheelin it wont start after i turn it off until i let it cool and its not overheating at all. it stays at the proper running temp acording to the stock gauge
I had a similiar problem after cleaning my throttle body on my 22re pickup. I as told to set the proper rpm after it is totaly warmed up, I did that , and woohoo, took care of it. I don't even want to go into the tecnicalities, but your motor needs to run at the proper rpm at idle, or it does this. Its due to shutting down the ejectors when brake is pressed for reasons, like economy and other reasons. Then, I set my valves yesterday, and same thing, but I reset correct idle, because I gained rpm from setting my valves, and took care of it, so set your darn idle at correct speed when totaly warmed up. I heard it effects it from anywhere from 950 or into the 1000 rpms +. So do it, and half of you guys will find the little reason. Wish I could explain it out like a tech., but it makes sense when heard. It just wants to shut ejectors down, no power needed when brake is on its thinking, yet it surges to keep running, so get that idle down to where it should be.
Set your idle RPM to correct specs, with engine at normal operating temp. , and watch your problem dissappear. Look in your maintenance manual to see the idling screw to adjust idle.
Def set the idle to the correct specs. If, however, this doesn't correct the problem, adjust the tps. These buggers will cause the exact "idle hunting" issues you're experiencing. If you happen to adjust the tps, recheck the idle and timing. These tend to go out of spec after the adjustment.
Yeah the screw next to the TPS sensor fixed my bouncing idle. I took these pictures as I worked on my 22RE if you need any shots for original refrence. I also tagged on a small video of the surging.
What is the idle when the engine is at operating temp.? When the computer goes into closed mode at operating temp it will cut the fuel if the engine is a 1000rpm or higher because it don't need fuel if the brakes is mashed.
