Need help with my ‘91 speedometer

My ’91 pickup with 150,000 is driving me nuts with the speedometer squeal. I’ve had the cable lubed and it did nothing to fix the racket. I’m pretty sure I’m able to change the head myself if I knew just how it’s done. Anyone out there done it? Will you share a trick or two?

Thanks for all you help…

Robert

Maybe the thing you have to lube is inside the housing?

Or i guess you could look for one. I just sold one on a mazda 626 for 55 bucks shipped. Extremely good deal. But If you search hard enough, you could find one that good ofa deal. Or look around surrounding junkyards.

The shop that did the lube job on the cable tells me you can’t open the case. I did an online search for a used speedometer head and found one for $65.00 including shipping. Trouble is after paying $92.00 for the lube and diagnosis, I don’t want to bring back to the shop and get charged for the installation. I’ve worked on the instrument cluster on my mustang without any problems, so I should be able to do the same on the truck. Just need to know the tricks.
