how much $ for junkyard engines

I am looking to buy a 89 toyota 4wd ext cab with 250,000 miles on it paint is rusty and the interior is nice. it has a 22re in it but the engine might be gone because the owner drove it with the water pump out of it and it overheated. It got hot enough that the engine stopped running. It does start now but there could be several things screwed in it. I was wondering how much a good running 22re would be from a junkyard. also how much $ and what is involved doing a 3.0 or a 3.4 swap? I could do the work myself. Also what are the chances of the engine being any good? or should I not even mess with anything with that many miles on it because I will need it to be fairly reliable. the tires are good on the truck and he only wants $500 for it. sorry for the million questions but I want to do some research first. Thanks a lot fellas and any input is appreciated.

as far as the price goes i dunno i aleays talk people down. and for an engine ive seen the 22 r / re long block fairly cheap at yards but if i was you spend the extra and get a new one a new one is about 1000 bux well worth it. look at www.car-part.com they have the stuff your lokking for usually. call arround
