adjusted valves same knock got louder.

Well i went mudding and was beating on the truck a bit in 4low and then i aquired a knock in the top end of the motor. The motor was extremely quite before. So i decided to adjust the valves to see if that could be it even though it was more of a knock. I found that the valves on the exhaust side were too tight. So i put them where they were supposed to be (.012) and the noise i heard got a hole hell of a lot louder. Could i maybe have bent the valves while romping on it?? Seems like the previous owner might have adjusted all of the valves to .008 instead of .008 for intake and .012 for exhasut.

I don't mean to scare you, but I had the same knock, sounded like it was around #2 or 3v cylinder on top slightly to the intake side. Well, to make a long story short, it is my #3 connecting rod bearing. I'm takingthe crankshaft to get ground down tomorrow, hoping it fixes the problem. You can probably tell without pulling the engine like I did, undo the engine mounts and jack up the engine until the bell housing just about touches your firewall, drop the oil pan and the oil pickup and you can access the end caps. I've heard that you can remove the oil pan this way, didn't seem to work for me but I could slide it out of the way to see and access the bottom end. I have pulled the engine since, but it is nice to know for sure before going to such an extreme measure.

Good luck to you. Hope I'm wrong!

oil pan removal..

Removing the oil pan is no problem that way except for the bolt removal, jacking, and messing around. The puzzle is figuring out how to jocky the pan around to get it out of there. It looks like no way will the pan come out of that tight a spot but it does, same thing jimmying it back in. When your laying on your back for a half hour figuring it out and having stuff fall into your face you think about things. Engine removal has got to be the only way to go.
