USA Which trannies will fit?

My 1982 Toyota 2wd has the stock 4 speed tranny. I was wondering what years of 5 speed trannys would be a direct swap? Would the tranny out of an 86 4x4 fit? Any help is appreciated.

Anybody? 5 speed direct swap from a 4 speed for an 82 2wd with a 22R and stock 4 speed tranny?

dont know for sure but if the block is the same id assume a 2 wd tranny will interchange up till 94 but im no expert. i would guess that theres probabaly different types of speed sensors and such and maby the drive shaft not sure though. my only thing to say is yank the trannies and compare them. if they match up let us know.

any 2wd 4cyl trans will bolt up, a 4x4 trans will not work, you may have to relocate your cross member/drive line length if the transmissions are different length

Someone asked me the other day if the stock rear end would work if i were to swap in a 5 speed transmission. Wondered if the rear end was geared toward the 4 speed tranny or if there would be any effect by changing to a 5 speed. Anybody have any helpfull hints or input on the subject?
