Stiff gas pedal in 92 Extra Cab

Does anyone out there know what I could do about the gas pedal in my 92 toyota 4X4 (175,000 miles)? It's not difficult to hold down, there's just a lot of friction. It's a manual, and the clutch and brake are just fine. Maybe the gas pedal has always been this way, but I doubt it. Can I access the spring to either lubricate or replace it? Any advice would be appreciated.
