89 6cyl sr5 throttle cable

I recently purchased an 89 4wd SR5 and there seemed to be excessive play in the footfeed (gas pedal) so after crawling under the steering wheel i can see that the rubber boot has split and turned back on itself at the end of the throttle cable on the inside of the cab, after the cable attaches to the gas pedal rod or bracket. Anyone have an idea for a fix? Thank You in advance for any help. (15 yr old son will be turning 16 in less than a week)

I'm interested in this as well. My '89 has that same crushed up rubber boot/cushion problem but the play in the pedal hasn't gotten to the point of calling it excessive yet. Replacing the cable looks fairly easy but I'll wait to see if there is a cheaper fix on this first.
