Hey guys,

I just got my first Toyota truck......

i got it as is, and it was a great deal, everything worx and it drives great till i engage 4wdlow or high........................

as soon as the truck starts moving, there is a noise coming from under the truck, and the faster you go the faster the moise gets, now its not constent, its almost like it happens with each turn of the drive shaft.......

if anyone knows or has come by anything like this please let me know as I would like to get a better idea before I take it to some mechanic...........

thanks

i gt one for around $70.oo.aftermarket,not toyota.they take about an hour or so to put in if you know what you are doing.if your truck starts to"shimmy"when driving don't wait long because you'll blow your rear end.

There is nothing wrong with your drive train as the tranfer case on the 4-Runners and pickups don;t have a differential gear inside so the result is binding of the gears when driving on pavement or concrete you must never drive on such road surface while in 4wd hi or low as stated in your owner's manual and service manual.

For more info:

http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/faq.htm#4x4damage

I copied and pasted the info:

"Why can't I use 4x4 mode all the time or on the roads?

There's drive to both axles and the front and rear axles have different turning circles. On hard/dry surfaces like tarmac there's no give on the road surface so you'll end up with windup on the transmission which can destroy it.
Permanent 4WD vehicles like Range Rovers have a differential in the transfer case to allow it to slip as you turn in circles. The Surf is not intended as a permanent 4WD vehicle. "

Burger what rig do you own?.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm,

Hey Sidney, I do agree with your post, but in this case the only time I engaged the 4wd was on a dirt road, and I have driven a 4runner in 4wd before. What about when you want to use your truck for plowing……? You need the 4wd on and you do go over a smooth surface once plowed…….? It has to be something ales, cause the sound/banging noise is just not right………

Anything ales that it could be……..?

Thanx guys

I'd vote for a u-joint problem. Crawl underneath and shake on the front driveshaft and see if there is any play in it.
