Vavlve Tape '94 22re

I have a very loud valve tap and it sounds like the number three or four valves. I've tried adjusting them and it just made it worse. Any ideas on what else I couild do? and if that could be the reason my engine is burning oil?

valve tap probabally isnt why you burn oil a worn valve stem seal might cause a little to burn off at start up ( a lil blue smoke) but if you have worn piston rings that could cause you to burn oil constantly. (blue smoke when accelerating after idlling a while especially. otherwis if your oil level drops check to see that you dont have an oil leak.

a worn valve stem seal wont hurt anything and ive seen cars run for 100,000 miles that had worn rings and smokes like a 2 stroke engine. but if your rings are bad the best thing to do is rebuild the engine.if you do BURN oil and dont leak it id say that the tap you hear might possibly be piston slap but that vary drastic. keep in mind these engines are noisy straight from the factory because of the metal timing chain and solid metal valve lash adjustors. if you hear a tick in the top near the valve cover it may just be valve lash that needs to be tightened up slightly or a worn timing chain can make a ticking sound too. either way if they need fixed and you attempt to do it yourself be carefull and read up on the procedure before attempting anything. basicly to adjust the lash you just need a feeler gauge , 12 mm wrench and a flat head screwdriver. but also remember that those lash adjustors will probabaly always be a lil noisier than a hydraulic lash adjustor. in my opinion a soild adjustable one is better because you can adjust for a different camshaft.

one more thing , check your exhhaust manifold it is prone to leak and when it does it will make a ticking sound as well. ... just my 2 cents... good luck.
