I have a 1983 4x4 SR5 22r, which I am fond of but heres the problem;
at cruising (30 mph or 60 mph) it will cut out and I mean out! but recovers instantly, and then won't do it again for a mile or mabe ten minutes. this has been going on for a month.
anybody have any suggestions to the mounting things I've tried ???
I had the same thing happen to me. A Toyota truck I own did that for several months and then cut out too long. When it started firing again it blew off my muffler. Long story short it was the ground wire in the distributor that was old and loose. Something to check.
my brothers mazda b26001 does this as well. We had it in the shop, and changed the O2 sesnsor. It seemd to lessen the amount of times it sputters, but it stil does this. I guess ill look at the wires on the dist. Am im also installing an accel coil for him problaly this week, so we'll see how it goes. Thatnk for the tip

You bought your truck in a shop for shutting off while driving?? And they replaced your o2 sensor?? Dam they seen you comming!!!! I would go back their and ask them what a o2 sensor does....Its a metering device that detect the gasses in the exhust system and so fourth. If I were you I would bring my truck back their and tell them either you reimburse me for the part and labor or ill report you to the Dept of Motor Vehicles!!!
Where do you live and what was the name of the garage that did this to you?
first of all, its my brothers truck, not mine.. he made the call on all the work. 2nd, the new O2 sensor seemd to help it on this problem, and fuel economy. (we were getting 9MPG on a 2.6L 4cyl truck.) I see where you're coming from with the dealer and all, but they did all they could and absolutely could not find the prob. They called off the work becuase they absoloutely could not find the sputtering problem, and gave us somewhat of a labor break too. Overall, yes you're problably right about the dealer, but thats not my call.

Gee now your saying you had poor fuel economy,Well first when was the last time it had a tune up? Did the check the timming? Fuel pressure? Was the check enging light on ? Your brother problem is different then what Robin has stated wrong with his truck,In your brother case they should of started off at the basic first.
As far as vehicle shutting off while your driving..Well we all know electraical proplems can drive us nust but does it have a crank sensor? The distributor is also a great place to check due to their is a pick coil in a lot of them
Sorry nofear not looking to piss ya off but I hate when people go some where to get something fixed and get the shaft!! I been a mechanic all me life and I am 38years old now my perants live over 300 miles away from me and they bring their cars to me when they need repairs on them or if it fails state inspection with they go throu evey year i belive.
Brakes jobs are the biggest rip off when the say you need this and that and how are you suposed to know if they are lieing?
They changed his O2 sensor cause they couldn't find anything else wrong. I have only had one fuel injected car so far in my 51 yrs of life. I posted on another board about that, a Toyota Camry. I will never own another fuel injected vehicle for the simple reason that I know nothing about them and as far as I am concerned, most shops don't either. They simply hit and miss until they find the problem. And thats IF they find the problem and charge you lots anyway. In the OP's first statements, it would seem to me that it is certainly an Electrical problem. I would be most certain of that. The changing of the O2 sensor had nothing to do with the problem but solved another problem being poor gas mileage etc.
I have found that 02 sensors do different things to different vehicles. In my 86 Camry, the car wouldn't run worth a dam, stalled all the time and even at intersections etc I couldn't get going unless I really babied the gas pedal. That cost me about $400 including a tow job. And the funny thing about it was that the shops never found the problem. It was a friend of mine who took it out, simply wire brushed it and blew it out with an air nozzle. Car was cured for running crappy. But I did replace the sensor anyway at $85
Fuel injected vehicles newer than 1987 are simply too complicated to maintain and the repair / parts costs are absolutely rediculous. Never again for me. I love my old 86 carburated Toyo PU with my fuel pump mounted right on the engine, not in the gasoline tank (A Hairbrained Idea)!
Yes you got to miss those old carb motors!! I been a machanic my whole life and I run a fleet shop of 911 emergency vehicles now for 17 years All Ford and Chevy from 1995 throu 2004 gas and diesel
And to tell ya the truth these new vehicles are killing all the tecs out their to try and keep up with all the new gizzmos they put on them lol
Hey krazy530,
Ur absolutely right. They add new junk to these new vehicles just to force you to go to the dealers or repair shops. As I stated on another post and you would probably be aware that the newest vehicles out now that are automatic do NOT even have a dipstick to check the transmission. Now if that isn't a rip!!!! You can't add fluid or anything. I can just see the repair costs. Remove transmission, disassemble, install a $2 seal, assemble and install. > $1452.95 LOL. Thats a killer.
I had no idea about the dipstickless automobile until I did some research on transmissions. And they started that in 2002. Unbelievable.
Nothing but Junk!
Yes how true at my job we just got in a recovery machine to flush dip stickless transmissions and antifreeze its suspose to be state of the art stuff. I also work alot on diesel motors and the new ford 6.0L is going to be a nightmare.
Any one here work full time s a mechinic?? and if so where Dealer,,,etc??
My buddy was at the toyota stealership looking for a new truck and he was telling the salesmen how his dads 90 pickup has over 200,00 miles runs great and never did anything to it, ect. The salesmen told him to tell his dad to NEVER get rid of that truck because of how simple and basic they are without all of the modern crap to go wrong. I think that really says somthing about those old pickups when a salesmen tells you not to get rid of a 15 year old vehicle.
