Just a theory: The lower area of the timing chain cover has been a topic of discussion here. From what I remember, it is possible to install a bolt that is too long...and it can touch the testioner. Use the search button.

Maybe someone could enlighten me about timing chains. I have an 86 toyo PU with a 22R engine. I have been reading that if you have an "interference" engine, breaking the timing chain can destroy the motor. However if you have an "non-interference" engine, there is no damage. Reading edgerice post, toyo trucks must have a Non interference engine because he broke the chain twice. Is this correct? Eric

Correct. Our motors are non-interference- meaning that if the timing chain is broken, the pistons will not have the reach to impact the valves, which would be bad...

I was actually driving with a destroyed chain for a little while!

Thanks for the info. The old Toyo truck I bought has 350,000 Km on it. The previous owners had it for 14 years and they told me they only did regular light maintenance on it ie: Oil changes etc. I am ordering up a Timing Chain set and installing it in a week or 2 when I have the help of my son. After reading about the damage that can be done on some vehicles when the chain breaks, I was really starting to get alittle afraid to even drive it until the chain/sprockets/guides etc were replaced.

toyota dependability !!!! is it better to get metal backed guides or regular plastic....my take on this is...wen the chain needs replacing the guide breaks so u kno to change it , with the metal baked guides they dont break instead i feel that your chain might break not knowing that it needs replacing,,,,,, which should i get

Yes, but how do you know when the guide is breaking? I'm putting in a steel chain guide next time...

I had about 139000 miles on my '86 22r when the left guide broke. It must've been squeezed between the chain and the front cover 'cause it blew a hole through the front cover casting. The valves also got bent. This all happened right after I'd started it up and was still parked. I'd heard plenty of chain slap under load the previous few weeks but was too busy too address it. I ended up installing a 20R double chain kit with steel guides. The kit included a modified front cover. At 290K m. the 20R chain showed no signs of wear. Unfortunately I blew a hose on the interstate doing 85 and didn't see the temp gauge pinned and the head warped along with some other horrors. Oh well

How did the valves get bent??? I asked this question (interference or non interference engine) earlier in this post because the Original Poster said he broke the timing chain twice with no engine damage, I understand the Toyota engine is a "Non Interference" engine which means no damage when the chain breaks.

most Toyota engines are non-interference, the 22r-re are a interference engine and may bend valves
