Sounds like a temp switch
I also have an '86 toyota turbo X-cab and I have a similar problem. Mine starts fine cold, but once up to normal operating temp and I turn it off and come back 5 to 15 minutes later it won't start. The longer it sits (cooler it gets) the better the chances of getting it to start. The local mechanics have suggested everything from plugs to fuel filter, but a service bulletin one guy printed for me seemed to make a lot of sense. In a nutshell, it pointed to the no.2 temp switch and the cold start injector time switch. The temp switch is a fix for a 5 to 15 min. soak/hard start/rough idle. The time switch is a fix for I think a 1 to 2 hour soak/hard start.
I've ordered the no.2 temp switch because it sounds closest to my symptoms and years ago when my a/c wasn't working, a mechanic replaced that same switch because it wasn't telling the ECU to "idle up" when the a/c was turned on so the a/c compressor wouldn't work. I should mention this new temp switch is an update from toyota that is responsive at a lower engine temperature causing it to tell the ECU to pressure-up the fuel system at a lower temp. If you have A/c, there is mention in the bulletin that there's a wire you need to disconnect from the ECU plug if you use this updated temp. switch or the engine will stay idled up after it is warmed up with the a/c running. I don't claim to be a mechanic myself but this fix does makes sense. Also, I have recently replaced my cold start injector, temp. switch no.1, a sensor to the right of the CSI time switch on the front of our 22R-TE engines, ignition control module($400 down the drain just for this part, old one still good if your looking for one), plugs, coil, distributor pick-up, all within the past year. All at the advice of a local mechanic and still have the problem. I especially enjoy when it leaves me sit at the gas pump. When I replace this switch I'll let you know how it works but right now I'm tapped out from all these other attempted fixes.
