I just bought a 1991 Toyota pickup truck. I've only had it for about 6 months, but I know for sure that the 4 Wheel Drive works. Just recently though, I can't get the 4 wheel drive to engage, and I don't know why. It has manual locking hubs that I think is probably the problem, but I'm not sure. They feel, and sound like they lock all the way, and my actual 4 wheel drive works (the front drive line turns), but I can't get those front tires to spin! This is quite a problem because of the amount of ice that is EVERYWHERE here in Utah. I have problems getting out of peoples driveways because of how light my truck is. I've already weighed the bed down now, but I'd still like my 4 Wheel Drive to work, any suggestions? Some friends have suggested that maybe they're frozen, because it is about, on average 10 degrees F here. Anyways, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks again!
that may be the problem. My hubs were just repalced in the last year by the previous owner. im not sure how they knew they needed to replace them, but it may just be normal wear. You might be able to jack up all 4 tires, and take off the fronts and put in 4WD and see if the axles are spinning into the hubs. if they are, then its got to be the hubs. Im by far no mechanic, but thats what id try to look at first.

I'm not sure how your hubs are built, but it was possible to assemble the hubs on one of my old Scouts so they would not engage. I once spent about an hour in a snowstorm in the woods taking them apart and reassembling them so they would work.
Both manual hubs going bad at the same time?! I doubt it. Manual hubs are pretty robust. If the front driveline is turning, are your half shafts from the front diff turning?

After you lock your hubs and put it into 4wd, let your truck roll backwards about 1 tire revolution (put it in reverse and back up if you are on level ground). My friend's 89 Toyota will not lock into 4wd unless he does this, and this has helped many other people who were having the same problem as you.

Only one hub has to malfunction to cause this problem unless you have a locking differential, which is not very common.
