Sounds to me like the timing belt slipped. When was it changed last? If recently, were the tensioners checked?

The timing belt drives the camshafts. The distributor is driven off a gear on one of the camshafts. If the belt slips, the timing relative to the crankshaft will be off.
Depending on wear, you might have to replace idler pulleys (there are two) and maybe the tensioner. When I had the timing belt done the second time, at about 120,000 miles, one of the idler pulleys needed replacing. Unless you have no way to get parts once the truck is apart, it is probably best to see what you need after you have opened it up.

Boy, am I glad you bought the belt You know,i bet if you change that and the tensioners, your truck will run a lot better and you will stop having to open the hood so much I think at 236k you got MORE than the useful life out of those items.do yourself a favor and get the tensioners.if you find that you dont wish to change them once you see how worn yours feel, you could return them, but you'll be glad that you have them there.

ok i changed all the timng belt and tensioners and lined the dristributor up and everything.. everything is on time... but that wasnt the problem....but it was well worth changin\g cause its was cracked everywhere and ready to snap.. so i feel good bout gettin that done ...all i can think of now is that it might be the coil or ignitor..hopefully.. i checked the resistance of the coil.. and the primary was normal i check the 2cdonary and it registered nothing...but i dont know my luck its just another part of trial and error after i replace that too but its my next best choice..i dont see how it would start when i had it a toof off and messed with the timing but run shitty if the coil was bad but i guess its possible... does that ignitor give it some kinda spark even if the coil is bad?
