Exhaust

Hello,
I was under my truck the other day and looked up and noticed something funny. I had apperently lost my tail pipe, earlier in the day. The muffler is still there but there is no way to put a tail pipe on it. So i would have to get from the cat back replaced, but why stop there since there is a little exhaust leak somewhere that i can't find, only hear. I am thinking about going to 2.25 or 2.50 inch exhaust but i was wondering what my options were as far as muffler and CAT are. What sounds good, i don't want anything loud after all it is a 4 cylinder. Also i read that 2.25 would give me more torque and 2.50 would give me more horsepower. Is this true, its a 92 4x4 if that matters. thanks for the help, taylor

unless you have a S/C or turbo, i wouldnt get too crazy with the pipe size. you will end up loosing all your lowend and MPG if you go too big. i would just keep the stock pipe size, maybe 1 size up at the most, and put a Borla muffler on it. it will sound good and you will get a little more power and MPG outa it. good luck

they make them in various sizes for different applications. nothing really special about it, but its just what i recommend. i have a friend who owns a really well known exhaust shop here and he recommends Borla mufflers for the Toyota 4cyl trucks if you want to get the most power/MPG gains. Flowmasters are second on the list but they are more noise then gains. its just my recommendation from someone who knows alot about the subject, but we all have our opinions.

right now my truck is totally stock. i just bought it about 2 months ago, but after the holidays i will start doing some mods including changing the exhaust to a Borla set-up. im planning on keeping the stock cat but if it needs replaced i might swap it or remove it completely, not sure. i dont know what the exact gains are but i trust the guy so thats why i repeat his words. he had done the exhaust on every truck i have owned and i have never been dissapointed. at first i was going to put a Flowmaster on it, but he recommended the Borla to get the most outa it. im not sure about the sound, but i dont think its too bad cause he knows i dont like my trucks rediculously loud. ill ask him how it compares to a Flowmaster when i see him this weekend and ill let ya know

I have 2 1/4 inch pipe run off the cat through a Flowmaster 40 Delta Series to a single 2 1/2 inch stainless tip in stock location. Its noticeable in the cab, but is definitely not too loud. With the windows down and the back window open, I love the sound. It sounds really good for a 4-banger and from the outside could be confused for a much larger engine. People really can hear you drive by, though. Has a real nice sound from about 800-2200 RPM. From there on, you really can't hear it over the engine sound. I would say, from the butt dyno, the most power came in the 1800-3000 range(i have a 5-speed). Really didn't notice any loss in low end power, but a nice gain in midrange. I can tell you that you probably shouldn't go over 2 1/4 inch piping. Mine does not pop or backfire when revved, which is a good sign that there is not a loss of power due to backpressure or lack thereof. Overall, the system was a good investment at $160 installed. Tips, muffler, and piping included. It has nice sound and good power coupled with an improved air filter.

And Just so you know, i know for a fact that a flowmaster 40 original series would probably be just as good power-wise, but will be louder and maybe a little raspier than mine. I also have heard nothing but good things about Borla. But most of what I have heard about Borla is their pre-bent cat-back systems. I don't have much experience with just their mufflers and custom-bent pipes. You should consider that a pre-bent system will give you better power, but less sound than a custom-bent system IMO.
