I have a 1985 Toyota Pickup and I have heard that in 1985, there were both early and late styles of 22r. How do I find out which I have without removing the exhaust maniforld? I have noticed that the valve covers on some 22r's are very rounded but my looks rather squared.
Any ideas?
I have an 84 SR5 pickup with an early model 22RE with the rounded valvecover. AFAIK, the later model 22RE came with the squared valvecover. Maybe someone with uber experience can confirm.

The lower blocks are the same. Its the pistons/heads that are different. The old 22r has a double row timing change, the 85 + 22r and 22efi have a single row.

nope, your wrong, Toyota started using a single row timing chain in 82 or 83, the early blocks 84 and older had domed pistons and big combustion chambers, 84 1/2 and newer had flat top pistons and small combustion chambers, the newer blocks have a 3mm deck height difference, so if you put a 84 and older head on a newer block, you will have cam timing issues, not to mention your compression ratio would be very low
The quickest way to tell, as the valve cover can be swapped, is to look at the water pump. The "R" has a flat top pump an the "RE" has a dish in the top of the pump, just under the front of the head.
