From what I've heard, the best money spent would be on a header and camshaft. Haven't done so myself yet, so I can not say for sure. I would say most important repair is timing chain (unless you know it was done in the last 100,000 miles), closely followed by cleaning the intake chamber of the black goo. I have just had to rebuild my engine due to trusting a bad timing chain. Keep in mind the 22RE is a great little engine, well worth working on and perf-modding. I have an '88 4Runner with one, and even with the addedrag of the front axle and the transfer case I still get over 30mpg (imperial gallons though-125% of a US gallon).

Good luck!

i have teh same truck man im looking at headers and a cam also. ive seen cams on ebay for 70 bux but id go with the header first . a k& n filter is also a good place to start.

hey d mpon why did you have to rebuild your engine due to the timing chain breaking? our engines arent interfearance are they.? oh yea and i agree with the goop in the intake chamber that thing was filthy. after the cleaning it ran alot smoother.

Best first mod is header mated to a whole new exhaust system. 2 to 2.5 inch, new muffler and do whatever you can do to your cat to flow (buy a new one, "clean" it with a broomstick...) after that a cam change is really simple and is a great time to change up timing chains. Also open up the intake with a cone filter on the MAF instead of the crappy air box. Those three together make a great difference.

I left it sitting with the coolant contaminated oil for a month while I got the parts (BAD idea!!!). This buggered the bearings, causing my #3 connecting rod bearing to spin on my first trip after doing the timing chain (an easy job after all-much easier than rebuilding the entire engine!). This pooched the crank, resulting in my having to get the crank reground by .030 and new mains and connecting rod bearings. While doing it, I did the head gasket, water pump and cleaned the black gunk out of the intake chamber. Big difference! We just got hit with a blizzard (Ma Nature wanted to give us a kick in the a** for the last day of 2004), and I had great fun driving the family out to breakfast thru the 3 feet of snow starting a foot behind my 4Runner. Believe it or not, the wife thought I'd get stuck (chuckle, chuckle). The 22RE seems to have plenty of torque for even plowing my axles thru wind blown snow.... And this is just with good quality 235/75 R15's, not even my 31" mudders (the 31's are no good on ice, so I use them for summer only).

Whee! And Happy New Year!

I've opened up the intake with a open breather filter and a intake/battery swap. It works quite well.

Also installed a Flowmaster Series 40 Muffler. Great sound and performance. I'm planning on LCE headers, and a new cat. A more aggressive cam will work very well with that setup. Check out LC Engineering for great 22RE parts.
