80 Toy floods easy when air temp in 30s or 40s

I have a 1980 Toy with a 20R that is difficult to crank when the air temperature is in hte 30s or 40s. When I attempt to crank it for the first time, it floods very easily. Many years ago when I was running an older carbuerated vehicle, I seem to remember a special "sequence" of tapping the accelerator to get it to crank without flooding that first time.

Anyone got any suggestions?

You have to move the accelerator pedal to release the automatic choke. Any sequence of tapping the accelerator is going to release the choke. Each time you push the accelerator down you are squirting a bit of raw fuel into the manifold, too. Too much of that will flood it. It sounds to me like your choke needs adjustment. On the older style (before all the pollution controls were added) I adjusted mine so the choke was barely closed at cold temperatures. I am not sure what additional adjustments might be required for yours. A good shop manual can tell you.

Thanks Reb. Definitely have a problem with the automatic choke. It did not appear to be closing properly and was very sluggish. I spayed all the linkage with carb cleaner and worked it all pretty good. I'll be able to check it again next week when I get back down to S GA.

I think I might need a rebuild on the carb altogether though.

Any recommendations as to place to purchase? Online?

Thanks,

Joel

Check the Auxilliary accelerator pump diaphram on the side of the carbuerator. It is round, has a small vaccum hose going to it with three little screws holding it on. If this gets bad it will cause flooding and poor fuel mileage. To check it just pull off the vacuum line and if there is gas in it.....its bad. Very simple to replace, however will need to get it at a dealer. Good luck!
