Engine: 22R-E
I have been having a wierd noise coming from the engine, not a knock...like a rattle, but it occurs sporadically. Its not usually heard at idle, but if the throttle is held a higher rpm it is heard or as the engine winds down from letting off the throttle. I looked through some posts and
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t55692.html this seems to describe the noise the best.
The noise doesn't really sound like a valve, but I figured the valves haven't been adjusted since we've owned it. So I did that today. I got the engine to normal temp. The valves all seemed to be tight...tighter than the .008 Intake and .012 Exhaust. I adjusted them to the specs, double checked them and got it put back together. Started it up and now I can really hear the valves...is this normal to hear the valves? I mean, I could hardly hear the valves tapping before...thats why I didn't know if weird noise was a valve tap or not.
Well, that weird noise is still there...now I am wondering about the timing chain. I am not sure when the timing chain was replaced last..if it was even replaced at all. Is this the noise that I could be hearing? I can't really pin point where the noise is coming from. I just made sure its nothing loose on the outside of the engine that could be rattling. I could get a stethescope (spelling?) and see what I hear.
I am thinking about checking/readjusting the valves again...the loud valve tap after the adjustment just doesn't seem right.
Any ideas about this noise I am hearing? Or about the now louder valve tap?
Thanks for any help
