Could be ball joints.

Perfectly normal - its your steering stops. You'll see them once you look underneath. They had plastic covers on them when new, but they don't last. Grease em, and you'll be good to go again.

ok it's not just one sound it's several, You think maybe cv joints then. I will take a look under the truck. Is there a way a guy can jack up the front end and turn? Will it still make that sound if it doesnt have a load on it?

It's the actual joint that makes the noise, not the boot.

That's like trying to fix an engine by putting a new hood on it

Well.., the clunking noise is still your steering stops I say. Greese them and at least that noise will go away, and you can focus on the next. It is a very simple fix, get some greese and just do it. CV joints make a clicking noise typically. If the boots are broke open usually thats a sign that they could be going bad. Also.., if your hubs are not locked in, or your not in 4 wheel drive the CV joints are not even turning... You can jack the truck up, and inspect your wheel bearings, brakes, etc. which could be making a noise. The brakes are known for making clicking noise which is only a loose caliper, and the part to fix that is only a couple of dollars.

All it is is the bumpstops. Mine does the same, and i have neglected to grease them. It feels almost like a shudder in the steering wheel. Apply a thin layer of grease to them and you should be fine.
