I have a 1994 Toyota Pick-up 22RE, and recently I have been having problems with my truck idling high. Anywhere between 1500-2000 rpms. I understand that cold weather affects high idle which mine does in the mornings, but my real problem is after the engine is warm and I have driven it for a while. Last week I was in my truck for at least 20 minutes when I came to a stop and shifted from 5th gear to neutral the engine sounded like I still had my foot on the gas. It wasn’t really loud and the idle speed at that time was around 1900 rpms. Once the light turned green I took off like normal for about a quarter mile to the next stop and it did it again when I shifted back to neutral and this time it went up to 2000 rpms and did not go down until I took off again. Once I took off the high idle stopped for the whole week. Fast forward to Sunday and it happened once. Same situation. I was coming to a stop and shifted from gear to neutral and the idle jumped and stayed until I took off again.
I have read the posts on this site and even though my situation sounds like most of the posts on this site regarding high idling I think mine is different because 1) most of the people here report that along with high idling there trucks seem to want to stall. And mine does not do that. One thing that I did try was when it was idling high I pulled over and checked the throttle cable to see if it was still engaged and it was not so I played with part that opens the throttle plate (not sure what that was called) and I did notice that I was able to move it to the closed position. It moves about a width of a needle pin. And then I noticed a major drop in idle speed. I did that once and then when the high idle happened again I tried it and it worked.
Could my problem lie in the throttle? If it was a vacuum leak like some of the posts here is that something I can check on my own fairly easy? Wouldn’t the leak be a consistent problem like high idle would have every time I drive my truck? I really can’t duplicate the problem because it not consistent.
No I did not clean the throttle plate. Not sure how to clean it. Is this something easy that I can do with limited tools? Isnt there a spray that can be used that can be bought at Pepboys or Kragen? TPS? How much does that run?
Fuel injection problems often are not easy to diagnose, but oftentimes can be very easy to diagnose or fix. Since it is newer complicated technology, many do not completely understand it. Many a mechanic will have you replacing this, that, and the other thing spending all kinds of money before the problem is finally fixed.., a great way for mechanics to make money in times like these. Our trucks also have a start injector timing switch which could be going bad, but I have yet to see that happen. Cleaning the throttle plate use some o2/injector safe carb cleaner and a toothbrush. Once you take the air filter hose off the throttle body you can see inside with a flashlight. Typically the vehicle should be running when your spraying a crapload in, but you can spray some in, use the toothbrush without the motor running is ok. Clean around the inside where the throttle plate closes and opens. When you see all the gunk inside you may want to go nuts with the cleaner.., just be careful.., a good mechanic would remove the TPS to have it cleaned.
Is your radiator fluid levels correct? Are all your heating/cooling systems at the right levels? When I had a leak in my radiator, my tach would tend to jump and level again with pretty good consistency when the engine was under more stress (i.e. running the air during a hot summer day or heat during a cold winter day). I replaced the radiator and had all cooling/heating systems flushed and i no longer have any problems. I think i might have head some pressure build-up in my throttle body somewhere, but i never got that diagnosed. I simply had it clean and flushed.

I have checked the radiator fluid level and right now it is between full and low. Closer to the low side, but it fluctuates. I will double check. You mentioned a leak in the radiator. How big of a leak was it? Was it to the point that you saw coolant on the ground? I ask because recently I had my radiator hose changed because I saw coolant on the top of my radiator, and there was builup too. I thought the leak came from the radiator hose because I had never changed it since I bought it back in 1994. Once the changed the hose and cleaned up the radiator where the build up was I have not seen an leak.

Thanks for your info, is there any product that you recommend for my truck to clean the throttle plate? I dont have to take the whole throttle body off do I? I was searching the web and found valvoline, carb, choke and throttle body cleaner. here is the site http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ...asp?product=52
One more question. The 'gunk' that you say I may find do I just use a towel to get most of it off? What happens if some of it runs down into the throttle body?

the throttle plate might be dirty or the dashpot could also be worn or stuck open. that or maby check the return spring... either way if you dont know how to adjust the idle speed , tps sensor , or the dashpot you might run into problems.. i had a vacuum leak on my intake manifold and it did the same thing to a tee man it didnt stall out either.. had loads of power just idled high and when i apply the brakes it jumped way down and then back up again in a constant loop. i replaced the gasket on the intake manifold and it smoothed out but it still runs a lil rough because i need a new timing chain.
I had coolant dripping out of the bottom of the radiator. It would run off the skid plate into where I park. My radiator was rotting and leaking fluid. I was told that because of this the engine might be building pressure and being stressed more, causing the unusual idle. However, if your levels are correct and your coolant level indicator is a t normal, this may not be the problem. It was in my case, though.
