Question Interior Vent Fan??

Ok the 89 Toyota Truck I purchased two months ago and just realized that the fan, for the vents of the cabin within the truck, is not working correctly. The truck doesn’t have A/C but I am looking to get one installed in the next month or two and wanted to see if I could resolve the fan issue before hand. The fan has four settings, Lo, then a dot for the next level which I will call 2, then another dot for the next level which I will call 3, and finally Hi. The problem is there is no air coming from the vents when I shift it to Lo or 2, but when I shift to 3 or Hi then it works properly. Going from Off to Lo I can hear a click, I’m assuming this is to kick the fan on. Anybody have ideas on what could be wrong? Or what things I can check to maybe determine what the problem is? Also if someone can here can give suggestions on what could be wrong, can you also give how easy/hard it is to fix and a general idea of how much it could cost to have someone repair if it is something I cannot do myself. Thanks in advance for your info and help.

Thanks Toysarefun. I'm going to try to locate my blower resistor and hopefully that is the problem. Thanks again and if you have any experience with this and have anything to add please do so.

It should be right near the blower fan motor. It is always in the path of the air flow (to cool the coils of wire)

My 91 Prizm had missing speeds and the resistor block did NOT solve it. Inspect the resistor block close before you get a new one, If 1 or 2 of the coils is open you should be able to see it.

Thanks, Craig. I tried to look for it last night and couldn't find it, I had only a few minutes to check. Hopefully the info you provided along with toysarefun should help me find it . What did you have to do to fix your missing fan speeds on you 91 prizm?

Mine was doing the same thing on pos. 3, now the whole switch is jammed up (i.e. will not move to any position from off). I just called the dealer and the switch is 54 bucks. I think I will just replace it myself. Does not look to hard, but probably have to take the dash apart to get the enviro control panel out. Once I replace the switch, I will have to see if they all work, and if not, hit the coil as well.

I did not end up fixing my fan ( mostly because I could not access the switch to replace it easily) I wired it on a toggle switch for high only.

My switch also got very tight and refused to move easily.

Ok, changed the blower resistor Friday afternoon and I have all four speeds working, I’m a happy camper now. Just wanted to tank everyone who responded to my thread and provided me with great information. Now its back to getting ideas on how much A/C is going to cost. Thanks again.
