Toyota 22re MAF

Well I built myself a 22re for my 4runner and although tight with only 500 break in miles it dynoed pretty low and I know Im hitting a big restriction from the stock air box and MAF. Does anyone know of a cheap bigger, better flowing MAF that will work for me?

the rebuild went like: .02 over on the bottom end with all new pumps, head is shaved for 9.5:1, full port and polish, 40/48 valves, dual valve springs, cam, header & exhaust, SHO Taurus electric fan, removed AC, MSD 6a and coil, and a bunch of other little stuff.

Thanks for the help.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can hook up a Supra MAF that is much less restrictive.

you can go to lcengineering.com or ebay. both have one. i just bought the one from ebay and it comes with chrome tubes that go from the efi throttle body to the sensor and then comes with an adapter after the sensor to bolt up to a cone filter. it gets rid of alll the plastic tubing but not the actual sensor. it is much better. lcengineering has a buch too so check both. and the one off ebay was only like 50 bucks too. good luck

Ive seen the k&n filter charger from LC. Im not going to pay $250 for an air filter.

The big bore tb is worthless if you dont get a better folwing MAF. that (and the air box) are the first restrictions in the series.

I asked some 22re celica dudes once and they told me either an 82 or 83 supra with some sodering will match up to our ecu's but no one ever followed up on it. I dont know what would need to be sodered, but if its bigger and would be a "direct" replacement... Does anyone know for sure?

Yea it sounds like I did a heck of alot of work, which i did, but its still a slug. much better than stock but equal in speed to my buddy's stock 22r in a little 2wd truck. Im starting to think that 4cyls pushing 3800lbs wont ever fell better than fresh, not even peppy.

It sounds like you need to move up to the next level... a turbo kit! I'm considering one of the LCE low boost kits for my stock 22RE, then upgrade to a high boost kit when (and if) I rebuild the engine with low compression pistons, etc...

Ill refer you to this post: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t61098.html

if i was to do a kit, Id go junkyard style and rob an ecu and turbo manifold from a 22rte truck somewhere, then piece together the rest. Ive done a twin turbo 89 5.0 mustang for just over $2000 and that put me into the high 10's on street tires and pump gas. Im not going to pay for one of LC's kits to go 15's in my daily driver.

The thought has definetly crossed my mind though.

I don't know of a good direct swap for the MAF, but you can hook up a cheap clear plastic hose manometer up to the intake tract and see if you are getting excessive vacuum at WOT. That would help narrow down the cause.
I don't mean to doubt your abilities, and the stock MAF set-up IS restrictive, but have you gone back over timing, fueling and such to make sure everything is spot on? You can readjust the MAF a notch or two to enrichen the mixture which might help. Just a thought, and doesn't cost anything...

^ no offense taken. Id ask somebody the same thing. I did a complete work over on it while making run after run on the dyno just so set the timing and air/fuel mixture. I did just do a quick fix by removing the air box, securing the filter to the top of the box, and turnign the assemble sideways. obviously not as efficient as a cone filter but dang did it wake the engine up.

^cool, wish I had that kind of access to dyno tuning...sigh...
Sounds like you could use the deckplate mod or similar.
I have an old 3VZ VAF sitting around, I'll compare it to the 22RE and see if I can find out the differences.

The AFM from a 5M-GE 2.8 equipped 1982 Supra will fit our 22re motors. They are plug and play. They have a 3" opening to attach the filter to and do not require an adapter to attach a 3" cone filter. I say the AFM is plug and play but I am not sure what affects this would have on A/F ratios. They run just fine on stock 22re motors with improved performance at high RPMs or WOT with no modifications. However on a modified 22re some adjustments to the meter may be needed to correct the A/F ratio and get premuim performance. If you take the top off of the supra AFM you will see that the internals are identical to the 22re meters with the acception that the door/flap has a slightly stiffer spring. Hope this was what you were looking for. I am new to the forum so I wasn't here when this question was originally posted. Just thought I would offer my info.
