clutch problem?

Hello, new member here.

I was driving my 1990 4x4 truck to Tahoe, in the snow, in stop and go traffic. When I was going up the mountain in 4th gear it was as if the car popped out of gear. The car was still in gear, but the engine was revving and I was going nowhere. The shifter and clutch seemed tight, not loose. My question could the clutch just go out so quickly with no prior indication? Or am I faced with another problem?

Thanks for any help

I suppose it is possible, tho I have never heard of it. Did you check to see if the transfer case didn't pop out of gear? I had a Scout that used to jump out of low range occasionally.

I think a little more information might be helpful here, are you saying that tour trucks clutch only slips in 4th gear? What happens in first, when you take off from a stop?do you experience slippage, or does it feel solid enough that after you're rolling that when tou mash the gas and let up your truck will lurch,or at that point are you hearing the engine rev,and experiencing slippage?possibly check your slave cylender to make sure its fully disengaging when you let up on the petal, it might have froze up on you.
